Haynesville and Gulf Coast: humidity, heat and drying acceptance
Drying a pipeline in a humid climate is not harder because the pipe is wetter. It is harder because everything you introduce to dry it arrives wet.
The sweep gas problem
Drying works by sweeping gas through a line and carrying moisture out with it. The drier the gas going in, the more water each unit can carry out.
In a humid climate, ambient air arrives close to saturated. Desiccant dryers have to work harder to reach the same inlet dew point, and their capacity is consumed faster.
Where nitrogen earns its cost
Nitrogen arrives dry regardless of the weather, which removes the inlet-condition variable entirely. On lines with tight dew point criteria in a humid climate, that predictability is often worth the cost difference.
It also introduces no oxygen, which matters for lines going directly into hydrocarbon service.
Heat cuts both ways
High ambient temperature raises the vapour-carrying capacity of the sweep gas, which helps evaporation.
It also widens the daily temperature swing acting on a water-filled line during the test phase, which makes the pressure-temperature analysis less forgiving. A segment sitting in full sun through a summer afternoon can move more than the residual you are trying to measure.
Reading soak rebounds in a humid climate
Acceptance requires the drying to cross the criterion and the final post-soak reading to remain within it. In humid conditions the temptation to accept a reading taken during an active sweep is stronger, because the active number looks good and the soak takes time nobody has.
- Record ambient conditions alongside every dew point reading
- Watch the series of rebounds, not any single value
- Confirm probe location and reference pressure — both change the number
- Do not accept on an active sweep
Water disposal
Gulf Coast discharge conditions and the proximity of sensitive receiving waters make the disposal end of a hydrostatic programme a longer lead item than crews from other regions expect.
Where that is the binding constraint, it is worth pricing a nitrogen alternative before defaulting to water.
